Why Oldham travellers come to us

Japanese encephalitis cover, planned around your trip

Longer trips through Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, India and the wider Far East are popular with travellers from Oldham, and for the more rural, off-grid versions of those journeys Japanese encephalitis is worth a conversation. It is not a vaccine everyone needs, which is exactly why an assessment matters.

At our Featherstall Road North clinic we will look at where you are going, how long for and what time of year, then advise honestly whether the two-dose course is right for you. There is no GP referral, and an accelerated option may be possible if you have left it a little late.

Japanese encephalitis vaccination in Oldham

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes across much of South and Southeast Asia and the Far East. It is uncommon in travellers but can be very serious when it does occur, so it is recommended for certain trips rather than routinely for everyone. At Oldham Clinic on Featherstall Road North our pharmacist prescriber can assess your itinerary and provide the two-dose course, with an accelerated option where time is short and no GP referral needed.

Who needs the Japanese encephalitis vaccine?

It is aimed at travellers spending longer in rural parts of Asia, particularly around rice paddies and pig farming, and especially during and just after the wet season when mosquito numbers are highest. Think extended backpacking trips, working or volunteering in the countryside, or repeated visits to affected regions, rather than a short city break. The risk is genuinely low for a quick urban stay, so this is very much a vaccine we recommend based on where you are going and for how long, which we will work through with you.

The Japanese encephalitis course and schedule

The standard course is two doses given 28 days apart, on day 0 and day 28. Where your departure is sooner, an accelerated schedule with the second dose at day 7 may be possible, so it is worth asking rather than ruling it out. The vaccine can be given from 2 months of age. Because the full course takes time, the sooner you book the better, ideally around a month before you travel. We do not list prices on the page; see our booking page for current prices. At the same visit we can review the rest of your Asia itinerary, including hepatitis A, typhoid and malaria advice.
