Why Oldham travellers come to us

Hepatitis B on a schedule that fits your trip

Whether it is a long placement overseas, aid work, or an adventurous trip well off the tourist trail, plenty of people setting off from Oldham have good reason to consider hepatitis B protection. The tricky part is usually the timing, because the standard course runs over six months.

That is where our Featherstall Road North clinic helps. We offer the accelerated schedule as well as the standard one, so even if your departure is only a few weeks away we can often get a course under way, with no GP referral and clear advice on the booster you will need later.

Hepatitis B vaccination in Oldham

Hepatitis B is a virus that affects the liver and is spread through blood and body fluids, for example through medical or dental treatment abroad, accidents, tattoos and piercings, or sexual contact. It is far more common in many parts of the world than it is at home, which is why it is recommended for a lot of travellers. At Oldham Clinic on Featherstall Road North we offer both the standard and the accelerated course, so we can usually fit the schedule around your travel dates, with no GP referral.

Who needs the hepatitis B vaccine?

It is worth considering for longer trips and for anyone whose travel means a higher chance of needing medical care or coming into contact with blood or body fluids. That includes healthcare and aid workers, volunteers, people travelling for extended periods or living locally, adventurous and remote travellers, and anyone taking part in activities where injuries are more likely. It is also sensible if you are visiting somewhere with limited access to sterile medical equipment. If you are not sure whether it applies to your trip, we will talk it through with you.

The hepatitis B course and schedule

The standard course is three doses over 0, 1 and 6 months, which is ideal if you are planning well ahead. If you are travelling sooner, there is an accelerated schedule of doses on days 0, 7 and 21, with a further booster at 12 months to give lasting protection. Because both options are available here, the main thing is to book as early as you can so we can choose the schedule that gets you as protected as possible before you go. We do not quote prices on the page; see our booking page for current prices. Hepatitis B is also available combined with hepatitis A in a single vaccine, which we can discuss at your appointment.
